There is no award chart at Rosewood Mayakoba, so nobody is booking this resort with Hilton, Hyatt or Marriott points. The realistic saving is about $720 in hard value off a three-night stay through Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts, and roughly $1,300 off the same stay if the hotel’s own third-night-free rate is live on your dates. Which one wins flips month to month, and right now it is not the credit card.
Elevate Miles Verdict
Rosewood Mayakoba cannot be booked with transferable points at a rate worth taking, and anyone promising a free night here is selling you something. The Amex Platinum is the strongest card at this property because the resort is a Fine Hotels + Resorts hotel and the card carries up to $600 a year in prepaid hotel credits, but on any stay of three nights or more the resort’s own complimentary-night offer plus a Rosewood Elite advisor usually beats the card stack outright. If you want a genuine points redemption in Mayakoba, walk next door: Alila Mayakoba is a World of Hyatt Category 7 hotel starting at 25,000 points a night.
What follows is every path priced out on the same hypothetical stay: the Amex route with its real numbers, the Chase route that quietly does not exist at this property, the Capital One route that is locked to one portal, the direct booking that most points sites skip, and the Hyatt award 600 meters down the lagoon. Rates and terms below were verified in October 2026, and the credit programs in question all changed during the year, so confirm them on your own account before you prepay anything.
What Rosewood Mayakoba Actually Costs
Start with the number you are trying to reduce. Kayak’s twelve-month pricing data puts the cheapest month at September, averaging $850 a night, and the most expensive at February, averaging $2,156 a night. Momondo showed rooms in a $614 to $975 band at the time of writing, and Mr & Mrs Smith listed a discounted rate from $625.17 a night on a three-night minimum for stays from June 11, 2026. Call it $700 to $1,100 in shoulder season for a Lagoon Suite and comfortably past $1,500 over the holidays and through February.
Then add what the headline rate leaves out. Mexican VAT runs 16% and Quintana Roo’s lodging tax adds 3% on top, so budget roughly 19% before anything else. The municipality collects a small environmental fee of around 54 pesos per room per night in Playa del Carmen at check-in. And every foreign visitor to Quintana Roo owes VISITAX, a one-time state charge of 2.5 UMA, around 285 pesos or roughly $15 per person, payable only through the official state portal — enforcement tightened sharply in 2026 and Cancún airport now scans the QR code at departure. It is a rounding error against a $3,000 hotel bill, but it is the one line nobody at the resort can handle for you.
For the arithmetic in the rest of this piece I am using a three-night stay in a Deluxe Lagoon Suite at $1,100 a night. That comes to $3,300 in room rate, about $627 in tax, and roughly $9 in environmental fees: call the all-in number $3,936. Swap in your own rate and the ranking of the paths below does not change, only the size of the gaps. Before you commit, it is worth pulling rates across the Mayakoba complex for the same dates, because the four resorts inside the gates price very differently from one another in the same week.

The Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts Path, Priced Out
Rosewood Mayakoba is a Fine Hotels + Resorts property, which is the single most important fact for anyone holding an Amex Platinum. Access requires a card in the Platinum or Centurion family — this is not a benefit of the Gold card, which reaches The Hotel Collection only.
What FHR includes at this specific property
Amex publishes the benefit list property by property, and Rosewood Mayakoba’s reads: noon check-in when available, a room upgrade on arrival when available, daily breakfast for two, a $100 credit toward eligible on-property charges, complimentary Wi-Fi, and a guaranteed 4 p.m. checkout. The property adds complimentary valet parking for one vehicle, which matters if you are renting a car at Cancún rather than taking the transfer.
Price the breakfast honestly, because it is the most undervalued piece. The resort’s listed buffet breakfast runs 1,000 pesos per adult and 500 pesos per child, which is roughly $54 and $27 at current exchange. Two adults for three mornings is about $324 of real spending you no longer do. The $100 credit posts against on-property charges at checkout, and the guaranteed 4 p.m. departure is worth something concrete here given how many flights back to the U.S. leave Cancún in the evening.
The $600 credit and the two windows that govern it
Per American Express’s own hotel credit terms, Platinum and Business Platinum card members get up to $300 back in statement credits semi-annually on prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or Hotel Collection bookings made through American Express Travel, for up to $600 per calendar year, per card account. No enrollment is required. The detail most people miss is in the timing: eligible bookings must be processed before June 30 to count against the January-to-June window and before December 31 for the July-to-December window. The booking date governs, not the stay date.
That rule is what makes $600 reachable on one trip. A February stay split into two prepaid reservations, one booked in December and one booked in January, draws both credits. Two Platinum cards in a household draw $300 each per window, because the cap is per card account. What does not work is stacking both halves onto a single booking inside one window, and Amex’s terms treat back-to-back reservations by the same card member at the same property within 24 hours as one stay for special-offer purposes, so this trick will not duplicate a complimentary-night offer. Prepaid also does not mean nonrefundable — most FHR rates carry flexible cancellation, and Amex claws the credit back and reissues it if you rebook in the same year.
The arithmetic on a three-night stay
On the $3,936 stay above: the $300 statement credit drops what you are actually charged to $3,636. The $100 property credit and $324 of breakfast take the effective cost to roughly $3,212, which is about 18% off. On top of that, a prepaid Amex Travel hotel booking earns 5X Membership Rewards points, so $3,936 returns about 19,680 points — worth something in the $350 to $390 range at the 1.8 to 2 cents most readers here can reliably get out of Membership Rewards. Count that and the effective cost lands near $2,840.
Now the part that changes the ranking. Amex periodically attaches a special offer to this property, and the most recent one was a complimentary third night on a three-night minimum. Read the terms rather than the banner: that offer’s booking window ran March 19 to October 15, 2026, for travel ending no later than October 31, 2026, and it was restricted to nine room categories including the Lagoon Studio, Deluxe Lagoon Suite and Deluxe Overwater Lagoon Suite. The property page was still displaying it after the booking window closed. The sister resorts inside the same complex had live offers at the time of writing — Banyan Tree Mayakoba showing a complimentary fourth night on a four-night minimum, booked by December 15, 2026 for travel ending December 19, and Alila Mayakoba showing a $200 spa credit on a two-night minimum, booked by October 29 for travel through November 30. When a free-night offer is live at the Rosewood, FHR becomes the best path at this hotel by a wide margin, because the free night, the $300 credit, the $100 credit and the breakfast all land on one reservation. When it is not, the ranking inverts, as the next sections show.
The Chase Path Works in Mayakoba, Just Not at the Rosewood
The Chase Sapphire Reserve stack in 2026 is genuinely strong: two $250 statement credits a year for prepaid stays of two nights or more at hotels in The Edit by Chase Travel, usable any time in the calendar year, plus a separate up-to-$250 credit through December 31, 2026 for prepaid Chase Travel bookings at IHG, Montage, Pendry, Omni, Virgin, Minor and Pan Pacific properties, plus the $300 flexible travel credit that resets on your cardmember anniversary. Edit bookings add daily breakfast for two, a $100 property credit, a room upgrade, early check-in and late checkout when available.
None of that reaches Rosewood Mayakoba. As of an October 18, 2026 crawl of the full Edit inventory, the Playa del Carmen list runs to fifteen properties — Alila Mayakoba, Banyan Tree Mayakoba, Chablé Maroma, Fairmont Heritage Place Mayakoba, Hotel Esencia, Maroma, The St. Regis Kanai and others — and the Rosewood is not among them. Chase’s own Points Boost page confirms Alila Mayakoba as an Edit hotel, listing it at 57,100 points a night, down from 85,700. The Edit’s roster grows through the year, so log in and check your dates before you rule it out, but do not plan a Rosewood trip around a Chase credit that currently has nowhere to land.
That 57,100-point figure is worth sitting with, because it implies a cash rate near $857 and a 1.5x redemption. Every Edit property is Points Boost eligible and Sapphire Reserve redemptions there generally return up to 2 cents a point, but “up to” does real work in that sentence. We ran the same comparison in detail in our breakdown of Points Boost versus a Marriott transfer, and the conclusion holds in Mexico: check the boosted portal price against the hotel program’s own award before moving a single point.
Capital One Venture X: $300, Portal-Locked
The Capital One Venture X carries a $300 annual travel credit, and the distinction that matters versus Chase’s is that it only applies to bookings made through Capital One Travel. There is no version of it that works on a reservation made directly with Rosewood or through Amex. Capital One’s Premier Collection layers on daily breakfast for two, a $100 experience credit usable on dining or spa, 10X miles on the hotel spend and upgrade priority when available, with no minimum-stay requirement — but only at properties actually in that collection, and the roster rotates. Confirm the Premier Collection badge in the portal for your dates rather than assuming it.
Even where it applies, the Venture X math at a $1,100-a-night resort is thinner than the Amex equivalent: $300 off, $100 on property, breakfast, and miles that redeem at a flat 1 cent against travel. It is the right card here only if you already hold it and the portal rate is competitive. Price it, do not assume it.
What Rosewood’s Own Offers Do That the Cards Cannot
Rosewood runs promotions on its own site that regularly outrun the card credits, and this is the section most points guides skip because there is no affiliate angle in it. The resort’s own booking page has been showing a complimentary third night with every two consecutive paid nights including daily breakfast and a signature Mayakoba experience, a complimentary fourth night offer that adds arrival airport transportation, up to 25% off the room rate with breakfast for two, and a complimentary fifth night in the Private Residences.
Run the three-night example again on a third-night-free rate. You pay for two nights at $1,100 plus tax, roughly $2,636 all in, against $3,936. That is about $1,300 saved, before any card benefit, and it is more than four times the Amex statement credit. Layer a Rosewood Elite travel advisor on top — the brand’s invitation-only agency program, free to use, that reports a $125 resort credit per stay at this property along with breakfast for two, a one-category upgrade and late checkout priority — and the gap widens further. Rosewood Elite benefits combine with the brand’s own promotional rates, and Elite guests sit ahead of Fine Hotels + Resorts and Virtuoso reservations on the upgrade list.
The trade-offs are real and you should know them before choosing. Booking direct or through an advisor forfeits the $300 Amex statement credit, the 5X Membership Rewards earn and the guaranteed 4 p.m. checkout, which FHR guarantees and Elite only prioritizes. Amex’s FHR special offers are also explicitly not combinable with other offers, including lower published rates, so you are choosing between the two paths rather than stacking them. And promotional nightly rates sometimes sit above the lowest available rate, so compare the all-in totals, not the headline discount. This is exactly the pattern we found at the other end of the luxury market in our Four Seasons Hualalai cost breakdown and again at Montage Palmetto Bluff: cards win the short stay, the hotel wins the long one.
Every Path, Side by Side
| Booking path | Cash cost, 3 nights at $1,100 | What comes back | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amex FHR, no special offer | $3,636 charged after the $300 credit | $100 property credit, breakfast for two (about $324), 4 p.m. checkout, valet, about 19,680 Membership Rewards points | One and two-night stays, and anyone who values a guaranteed late checkout |
| Amex FHR with a live free-night offer | Roughly $2,336 after the credit when a third night is complimentary | Everything above, plus the free night, on a 3-night minimum in eligible room categories | The best path at this property whenever the offer window is open |
| The Edit by Chase Travel | Not applicable | Rosewood Mayakoba was not in the Edit inventory as of October 18, 2026; Alila, Banyan Tree and Fairmont Heritage Place Mayakoba were | Sapphire Reserve holders willing to stay elsewhere in the complex |
| Capital One Venture X | $3,636 if the Capital One Travel rate matches | $300 travel credit, plus a $100 experience credit, breakfast and 10X miles only if the property shows as Premier Collection | Existing Venture X holders with an unused travel credit |
| Rosewood direct, third night free | About $2,636 all in | Daily breakfast and a signature experience built into the offer | Stays of three nights or more, cash payers, anyone without a Platinum |
| Rosewood direct via an Elite advisor | Same rate as direct | $125 resort credit per stay, breakfast for two, one-category upgrade priority ahead of FHR, early and late timing priority | The best upgrade odds at a 129-suite resort that runs full |
| Alila Mayakoba on Hyatt points | 25,000 to 55,000 World of Hyatt points per night | A real award chart, resort fee waived on award stays | Anyone who wants an actual points redemption inside Mayakoba |

This guide is about the hotel, but the flights decide whether the trip happens. Award seats are far scarcer than award nights.

The Actual Points Play in Mayakoba Is Next Door
Mayakoba is a 1,600-acre gated complex with four resorts sharing the same lagoons, beach and restaurant network, and guests move between them by boat and golf cart. One of the four has a published award chart. Alila Mayakoba opened on February 12, 2026, replacing the former Andaz after a full renovation, and it is the Alila brand’s first property in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Two things happened to it quickly, and most coverage still quotes the pre-change number. It opened as a Category 6 at 21,000 to 29,000 points a night, then moved to Category 7 on May 20, 2026, the same day World of Hyatt replaced its three pricing tiers with five — Lowest, Low, Moderate, Upper and Top. Under the current chart, a standard room at a Category 7 property runs 25,000 points at Lowest and tops out at 55,000 at Top, a 57% increase on the old 35,000-point peak. Hyatt said it would move only a limited number of nights into Upper and Top during 2026, with broader adoption later, so the spread you see on your dates matters more than it ever has. One traveler reported booking five nights there at 29,000 points a night under the old Category 6 peak rate shortly after opening.
Here is where it gets interesting against the portal. Chase’s own Points Boost page lists Alila Mayakoba at 57,100 Ultimate Rewards points a night. A Sapphire Reserve transfers to World of Hyatt at 1:1, so a 25,000 or 35,000-point night costs you 25,000 or 35,000 Ultimate Rewards points for the identical room — less than half the portal price at the low tier. The Sapphire Preferred and Ink Business Preferred dropped to a 4:3 Hyatt ratio on October 1, 2026, which turns a 35,000-point night into 47,000 Ultimate Rewards points and narrows that advantage considerably. Bilt still transfers to Hyatt at 1:1. Cash rates at Alila start around $600 in summer and closer to $1,000 in winter and spring before Mexico’s taxes and a $45 daily resort fee, and that resort fee is waived on award stays. Check the live transfer bonus tracker before moving anything, since Hyatt bonuses are rare but Chase and Bilt both run promotions that change the math.
Honest comparison: Alila is a very good hotel and the Rosewood is a better one, consistently rated the top property in the complex and ranked No. 95 on the extended World’s 50 Best Hotels list in 2025. If the Rosewood is the point of the trip, pay for it and use the credits. If the point is Mayakoba, the Alila award is the better use of a points balance and you can still eat at the Rosewood’s restaurants. Our wider look at where Hyatt points go furthest in Mexico makes the same case at a lower price point.
Getting There on Points
Cancún International is about 40 minutes north of the resort gates, and it is one of the easiest international airports in the hemisphere to reach on miles because almost every U.S. carrier flies there. The cleanest published number belongs to Atmos Rewards, the program formed when Alaska Mileage Plan and HawaiianMiles merged, with Alaska adopting the name in August 2025 and HawaiianMiles folding in that October. Its partner chart prices American Airlines flights under 700 miles at 4,500 points one-way in economy and double that in business, which covers Miami to Cancún. That is the cheapest reliable way into the Riviera Maya on points, and awardwallet reported it as current in October 2026.
Beyond that, be careful with numbers you read elsewhere. Aeroplan’s North America chart starts at 6,000 points one-way in economy for partner flights under 500 miles, but most U.S. gateways to Cancún sit in higher distance bands, and Aeroplan prices Air Canada and several select partners variably rather than at chart rates. United, Delta and Aeroméxico all price Cancún dynamically, which means a single quoted figure is wrong most of the time — pull live prices for your own dates. When you have the dates fixed and just need to know whether the seats exist, search the flights on Seats.aero before you transfer anything.
If the hotel numbers above have convinced you that your balance is better spent on the flight than the suite, the question becomes where else that balance reaches. Roame searches 25 programs at once across a full year of dates, which is the fastest way to find out whether the points you are holding open up a premium cabin you had not considered.
Which Card Is Right for You?
- Get the Amex Platinum if you are staying one or two nights, want the guaranteed 4 p.m. checkout, or can time a booking into each half-year credit window for $600 against one trip
- Get the Chase Sapphire Reserve if you are willing to stay at Alila, Banyan Tree or Fairmont Heritage Place inside the same complex, where the two $250 Edit credits and Points Boost actually apply
- Use the Capital One Venture X only if you already hold it and the Capital One Travel rate matches the direct rate, since the $300 credit is locked to that one portal
- Skip the cards entirely if you are staying three nights or more and Rosewood’s own complimentary-night rate is live — a Rosewood Elite advisor books the same rate with a $125 resort credit and better upgrade priority
- Use World of Hyatt points if you want a true award stay in Mayakoba, and aim for a Lowest or Low tier night at Alila rather than Upper or Top
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I book Rosewood Mayakoba with hotel points?
No. Rosewood has no guest loyalty program and the resort does not participate in Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott or IHG, so there are no points to earn or redeem here. The only ways to reduce the cost are credit card statement credits against a cash booking, the hotel’s own promotional rates, and a Rosewood Elite advisor booking.
Is Rosewood Mayakoba part of The Edit by Chase Travel?
It was not in the Edit inventory as of an October 18, 2026 crawl of all 1,473 properties, while Alila Mayakoba, Banyan Tree Mayakoba and Fairmont Heritage Place Mayakoba were. Chase adds properties throughout the year, so log in to Chase Travel and look for the Edit banner on your dates before concluding either way.
How do I get the full $600 Amex hotel credit on one trip?
The credit is up to $300 per six-month window per card account, and the window is set by when the booking is processed rather than when you stay. Split the trip into two prepaid reservations and book one before June 30 and the other on or after July 1, or before and after December 31. A second Platinum card in the household draws its own $300 per window.
Does booking through Fine Hotels + Resorts cost more than booking direct?
Sometimes. FHR rates usually carry flexible cancellation terms and are frequently competitive, but they are not always the lowest published rate, and FHR special offers are explicitly not combinable with other offers including lower rates. Compare the all-in FHR total after the $300 credit against the direct total on the hotel’s own promotional rate before you prepay.
What does Alila Mayakoba cost in World of Hyatt points now?
It moved from Category 6 to Category 7 on May 20, 2026, the same day Hyatt expanded to five pricing tiers. A standard room at Category 7 ranges from 25,000 points at the Lowest tier to 55,000 at Top, so the night you pick matters enormously. Hyatt waives resort fees on award stays, which is worth $45 a night here.
What is Rosewood Elite and does it cost anything?
Rosewood Elite is the brand’s invitation-only travel advisor program. Bookings are at the same rate you would pay direct and advisors generally charge no fee for Rosewood reservations, because the hotel pays the commission. At Rosewood Mayakoba it reports a $125 resort credit per stay plus breakfast for two, a one-category upgrade subject to availability and timing priority, and Elite guests are prioritized ahead of Fine Hotels + Resorts bookings for upgrades.
Do I still owe the Quintana Roo tourist tax if my hotel is prepaid?
Yes. VISITAX is a state charge on foreign visitors of about 285 pesos per person, paid once per trip, and it is separate from your hotel bill — a 2025 proposal to fold it into room charges was rejected. Pay it on the official state portal before you travel and save the QR code to your phone, because Cancún airport now checks it at departure.
Bottom Line
Rosewood Mayakoba is a cash hotel, and the useful question is not how to book it free but how much you can legitimately knock off. The Amex Platinum takes roughly $720 of hard value plus about 19,680 Membership Rewards points off a three-night stay, and considerably more whenever a Fine Hotels + Resorts complimentary-night offer is open — check that property page before you book anywhere else. Outside those windows, the hotel’s own third-night-free rate through a Rosewood Elite advisor saves about $1,300 on the same stay and gets you a better shot at an upgrade. And if what you actually wanted was a points redemption on this stretch of coast, book Alila Mayakoba for 25,000 to 55,000 World of Hyatt points and spend the savings on dinner at the Rosewood.
One last note for anyone sitting on a large transferable balance: 169,000 Membership Rewards points redeemed at Amex Travel’s 1 cent against a $1,700 stay is a worse deal than paying cash and keeping the points for a lie-flat seat. If you are weighing which currency does the most work across a year of trips rather than one booking, Roame’s subscription is built for exactly that question.
